We were first approached to consider producing one of our handmade memory glass pieces on the anniversary of a beloved brother’s passing. Several family members came to see us to discuss options and what was possible. We always feel immensely touched when a client trusts us with the task of creating a special item of Glass or glass jewellery that holds close the memories of a loved one. It is a true privilege.
After giving the idea some thought our client came back to the studio to discuss what he would like us to make for him: “I would like to engage you to make me a Torc style silver bangle with a memory glass insert.”
Planning
As our client was with us at the studio, we got right down to discussing the design he wanted us to use for his commission. The metal of choice and colours for the ashes in glass insert. As we were discussing ideas, we sketched out the design that the client chose. By working this way, it enabled us to come up with a unique, handcrafted piece of jewellery that our client would love.
We followed up the meeting by pricing up the materials, finalising the design to ensure it aligned with our client’s vision and then getting the ‘go ahead’ to start.
Action
As with all our personalised commissions we took a 50% deposit so we could begin ordering in the precious metal, glass selections and additional materials needed to get started. A date was booked in to begin the intricate work required for this special piece of handmade jewellery.
Gail uses a very old technique of lampworking to create the glass component that encases the ashes and that becomes the focal point of the finished piece. While all the colour elements had already been decided upon, we had to create a couple of practice pieces with no ashes, to perfect the required look. The craftsmanship and creativity reflect Gail’s expertise in the application of this skill. Then came the work with the silver to create the bezel setting and torc bangle to set the glass.
Result
After the memory glass jewellery had been completed and polished to a high shine, it was carefully checked before the glass was set in place. The client was contacted and came to collect his beautiful silver wrist torc commission a few days later.
To us, this is such a special time to meet our client again and present them with the finished creation, that they entrusted us to make for them. It is very emotional and richly rewarding to see the immediate connection they have with their new piece of memory glass, and we realise once again how special it is to be able to offer this service for people who have lost someone so dear to them and help them hold those memories close.
If you feel like you would like your own special piece of memory glass to remember someone special, then please do contact us and be confident in the knowledge we treat your request with compassion and respect.
