Case Study:
Isle of Wight Splashback

The Brief

Our clients met us at Mudeford Arts Festival and loved our work. They had not long had a new kitchen fitted and were looking for just the right design for a splashback. When they saw our glass, they knew immediately that our fused glass panels were the way to go and went home to work out the size panel they would like.

They called to arrange to come to the studio to chat about the glass splashback commission for their kitchen. The clients were quite specific about including the Isle of Wight into the design as that was a part of their coastal view and was special for them as their daughter had created a picture for them of the view and wanted us to create the splashback including this panorama.

Planning

At the studio, we explored various ideas and glass techniques as they were particularly drawn to a sea scene created with fine glass powders we could see straight away how we could incorporate the Isle of Wight into this design.

Following our discussion, we prepared drawings for them to see and once approved we provided pricing for the commission and received the go-ahead to start the project. As with all our custom commissions, we took a 50% deposit, allowing us to order the glass and materials to start work.

Action

We arranged a timeline for the complex crafting of this unique, handmade, kiln-formed glass splashback. Ian sized up the chosen design for Gail to use and the application of colour commenced. First a white powder on the base glass created an opaque background; then all the detail and design was added and the splashback went into the kiln for firing. Although the colour scheme had been agreed upon, the arrangement was left to Gail’s creative vision to apply the agreed colours into the final design.

Result

Once the panel was completed and carefully inspected, we contacted the clients to announce their splashback was ready for them. We arranged a date and time to deliver and install Glass Art Splashback. Their excitement upon seeing it was unmistakable and it made such an impact to the whole room once it was in place.
It means so much to us both to create and deliver a piece of functional glass art that our clients love.
