Dorset Scenes Window Insert

The Brief

Our clients had seen us at an event the previous Year and they had a creative idea for a set of windows they felt we could bring to life for them. They called to arrange to come to the studio to chat about a possible commission of a series of four handmade windows to adorn a pair of interior doors accessing the living room. The clients were quite specific as to which Dorset landscapes they would like included.

Planning

At the studio, we explored various glass styles, and they were particularly drawn to a textured tree scene, wondering if we could adapt the technique into their desired landscapes. Their request included Colmers Hill, Golden Cap cliffs and bay as well as a small representation of Corfe Castle.

Following our discussion, we prepared material pricing and drafted several design concepts for their review, ultimately finalising the glass design and receiving the go-ahead to start the project. As with all our custom commissions, we took a 50% deposit, allowing us to order the necessary glass and materials to start work.

Action

We scheduled a start date for the intricate crafting of these unique, handmade, kiln-formed glass pieces. Gail used an impressionistic technique to create a rich texture across the four windows. Although the colour scheme had been agreed upon, the arrangement was left to Gail’s artistic interpretation.

The craftsmanship and creativity reflect Gail’s expertise in the application of this skill. The kiln formed glass windows went into the kiln for three separate firings of around twenty – twenty-four hours each time to allow for the additional layering of colour to form the desired effect.

Result

Once the panels were completed and carefully inspected, we contacted the clients to announce their window panels were ready for them. Their excitement upon collecting the glass windows was palpable, and while we felt a bit of nervous anticipation, it was equally thrilling. Witnessing their joy and delight made our day. We had realised their concept and achieved the brief!
